Our Engine Team is a FUN bunch who get a kick out of pistons, pumps, and oil-water separators and enjoy getting their hands dirty to ensure the safe and smooth operation of the onboard propulsion systems, engines, waste disposal systems, electrical and fire systems, air conditioning, and mechanical equipment. 

Set sail with Carnival Cruise Line and help us bring the FUN to life aboard one of our fantastic vessels as a 2nd Engineer. You will play a vital part in technical operations and report to the Staff Chief Engineer and the Chief Engineer. You will consistently monitor, control, and troubleshoot all engine machinery equipment while being on watch in accordance with our policies, procedures, and safe working practices, promoting a strong safety culture and adhering to all environmental policies and procedures at all times. 


Job Summary

  • Stands engine room watch under the direction of the Chief Engineer and supervises the assigned 3rd Engineering Officer.
  • Operates and monitors main engines, auxiliary machinery, fuel systems, and purifiers (HFO, MDO, LO).
  • Manages bilge and sludge systems, emergency shutdown valves, and quick-closing mechanisms.
  • Oversees propulsion systems such as Azipods, thrusters, stabilizers, and steering gear.
  • Maintains ballast, heeling, grey water, and black water systems.
  • Supervise the freshwater production, technical water distribution, and chemical treatment processes.
  • Conducts routine water testing, including potable water sampling and backflow preventer checks.
  • Operates AAQS and wastewater treatment systems when installed.
  • Issues and controls Permits to Work (Hot Work, Confined Space, etc.).
  • Ensures logs, maintenance records, and InfoShip/AMOS entries are current and accurate.
  • Enforces compliance with environmental regulations (MARPOL, SOLAS) and company safety standards (GHESS).

 

Responsibilities

  • Oversees main engines, auxiliary equipment, fuel feeding systems, boilers, steam plants, and purifiers during the watch.
  • Monitors bilge conditions and maintains the integrity of piping systems throughout assigned areas.
  • Provides ongoing supervision of all systems in operation, ensuring safety measures are fully implemented and functional.
  • Records all required monitoring data, including soundings, counters, mass flow, and water transfer logs, in compliance with GHESS procedures.
  • Ensures assigned machinery is maintained in good working condition and in full compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations.
  • Reports any abnormal conditions or system irregularities promptly to senior engineering staff.
  • Conducts scheduled maintenance activities as per the vessel’s planned maintenance system and ensures that logs and records are updated accordingly.
  • Inputs maintenance actions and inventory updates into InfoShip/AMOS or equivalent platforms, where applicable.
  • Supervises and verifies the receipt and condition of ordered spare parts and materials.
  • Keeps the operating manuals for assigned equipment accurate and up to date.
  • Participates in company-mandated safety drills, training sessions, and emergency preparedness activities.
  • Applies all relevant company standards and procedures related to the Global Health, Environmental, Safety, and Security (HESS) system.
  • Carries out additional assignments as directed by the Chief Engineer.


Minimum Requirements

  • To apply for this role, you must hold an IMO Certificate, Regulation III/2, 2nd Engineer
  • High School Diploma; applicants must be +21 years old
  • 3+ years of experience working as a watchkeeper
  • Valid STCW certificates, as required for the position


Preferred Experience

  • Experience working within a cruise ship environment is a plus
  • 2nd Engineer experience or higher is a plus

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Experience Level

At least 5 years of experience in similar roles is required.

English Proficiency

You must be proficient in both written and spoken English.

Guest Facing Experience

Minimum guest interaction might be required.

Physically Fit

You must pass a Seafarers Medical Fitness Examination.
