Set sail with Carnival Cruise Line and help us bring the FUN to life aboard one of our fantastic vessels as a 1st Officer. 


The 1st Officer plays a vital role in our onboard navigation teams. As part of the Watch team, you will prioritize the safety of the voyage so our guests can have a great vacation experience in their home away from home!  


You’ll be working around the vessel and on the bridge to maintain the highest levels of safety.  


Along with our other Team Members, you’ll be a highly visible member of the team and will constantly interact with our guests and help them with questions.  


The vacation experience we promise our guests will start with you! Your duties include:


  • Responsible for the safety of navigation as a Bridge Watch Leader as required by the BRMM Procedures and schedule of the vessel
  • Appointed as Voyage Planning Officer responsible for applying the Voyage Planning procedures, including documents and
  • Ensure all Nautical Charts and all Publications are corrected and updated as required.
  • Maintenance and Tests for the Bridge instruments, including GMDSS, Iridium, and other communication equipment. Responsible for the familiarization and the Ship’s Manoeuvre characteristic of the deck officer assigned to his/her watch.
  • Provide regular reports to the Captain/Staff Captain.
  • Ensure that the Company’s Safety and Environmental policies and procedures are duly applied and followed at all times.
  • Facilitate a work environment that supports a successful Safety Culture; implement and maintain an effective Environmental/HESS management system; enforce and promote the Company’s procedures in the team/Department under their responsibility.
  • Support (but is not limited to) the Staff Captain and Captain in managing the external communications as required.
  • In charge of the daily Ship’s stability calculation, including freshwater and ballast management control plan (following the Stability Procedure currently in place).
  • Assist the Staff Captain by ensuring that the Deck Officer assigned to the watch is familiar with the use of the ship’s stability calculation computer program (onboard NAPA)
  • In charge of the education and professional growth of the Junior Officer/Cadet Officer, involving their duties both during and while off the watch activities.
  • Responsible for the tank inspection, maintenance and record-keeping (FW-BW-GW) as directed by the Staff Captain
  • Responsible for the upkeep of the ship’s certificates as directed by the Staff Captain
  • Responsible for the upkeep of the Deck and Engine Officer’s Certifications, as directed by the Staff Captain
  • Support the Staff Captain and Safety Officer by conducting crew safety drills as needed
  • Support the Staff Captain and Training Officer with the Vessel Familiarization program
  • Any additional assignments at the discretion of the Captain and Staff Captain


Minimum Requirements:

  • IMO Certificate – Chief Mate (STCW II/2 on ships of 3000 Gross Tonnage
  • 2 Year's experience as a Chief Mate
  • Fluent English communication skills, both written and spoken
  • Excellent leadership skills, with the ability to act quickly and remain calm when under pressure
  • Proven experience working in a diverse and fast-paced environment
  • Valid GMDSS Certificate and Flag endorsement
  • Additional Training certificates as per STCW 95 and Company Regulations



Preferred Requirements:

  • Master Unlimited License
  • 2+ years experience as Chief/1st Deck Officer on medium to large cruise vessels
  • Quick progression through Nautical Ranks, with experience working on various vessel sizes
